Norbeck Wildlife Preserve

Norbeck Wildlife Preserve was established by Congress in 1920 for the "protection of game animals and birds and to be recognized as a breeding place therefor." Although it does not prohibit other uses, the law leaves little doubt: Norbeck is to be managed for the benefit of wildlife.

Norbeck is home to a variety of wildlife, including elk, deer, mountain goats, small mammals and birds. It contains rugged granite formations and small streams. The predominant vegetation is ponderosa pine, but there are also stands of spruce and hardwoods, and small open meadows.

The Preserve covers about 35,000 acres. Approximately 28,000 acres are within the Black Hills National Forest. The remaining land is privately owned or under the jurisdiction of Custer State Park. Black Elk Wilderness lies within Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, as does the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway.

With an America Outdoors' outfitter, you can have the trip of a lifetime at the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve.  Contact a member today about outdoor activities in the preserve, such as fishing, horseback trips, lodging and tours and treks.
