America Outdoors outfitters offer a guided hiking trip across the Blue Ridge Mountains. This 5-day North Carolina tour follows the route of the famous Blue Ridge Parkway and explores the many beautiful trails hidden just off the scenic highway.
Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in the east, is the backdrop for the excursions into the Blue Ridge mountains. Hiking options include an awe-inspiring hike up Grandfather Mountain, trails that lead through Linville Gorge (one of the most spectacular gorges in the east) and the more leisurely carriage routes that wind through Moses Cone Memorial Park. The trips are timed to coincide with the spring wildflower displays and the colorful fall foliage.
The trip begins at the elegant Gideon Ridge Inn in the fascinating little town of Blowing Rock. Views from the inn's stone terrace are endless, stretching out along the Blue Ridge and down to the piedmont below. From here, hikers will venture to the village of Valle Crucis, which is home to the famous (and tempting!) Mast General Store and the lovely Inn at Taylor House. This turn of the century farmhouse has been lovingly restored, and it is filled with beautiful antiques and art.
The route then follows the backbone of the Appalachian mountain chain, where hikers are treated to stunning views as they traverse, on foot, the unusual grassy "balds" that form the North Carolina/Tennessee border. Hikers will continue this path until the last stop, the Archers Mountain Inn, on this unique, amazing adventure.
